HTML is a language for describing webpages.

  • HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language
  • HTML is not a programming language, it is a markup language.
  • A markup language is set of markup tags.It is a modern system for annotating a document in a way that is syntactically distinguishable from the text.
  • The purpose of the tags are to describe page content.


HTML usually consist of HTML tag’s

  • HTML tags are keywords surrounded by brackets as shown below
  • <b>   : Opening tag also called as start tag 
  • </b> : Closing tag also called as end tag
  • HTML tags normally come in pairs like <b> and </b>
  • The end tag is written like the start tag, with a forward slash before the tag name
  • In between these tags web-designers can add text,comments and other type of text based content.//

Web Browsers

The purpose of web browser is to read HTML Document and compose them into web-pages.The browser does not display tags, but uses the tags to interpret the content of the page.

HTML documents describes web-pages. Documents consist of HTML tags and plain text and these HTML documents are called web-pages.
